Beat RSi with the correct choice of keyboard

For years I was using a regular shaped ‘normal’ keyboard which you could find at any shop or computer superstore. I was not aware of it at the time, but I was creating problems for myself like RSi or repetitive strain injury.

The term musculo-skeletal disorder is used to describe a number of conditions such as tenosynovitis, carpal tunnel, and tendinitis. Many of these conditions are known as Repetitive Strain Injury or RSI. Repetitive Strain Injury is a term similar to that of ’sports injury’ in that it tells more about how the injury was sustained, rather than what the injury actually is.

In 2009 nearly half a million people in the UK suffered from some form of RSI condition. The problem is on the rise with increase reliance on technology such as the computer, that uses the keyboard frequently. Because people get less exercise nowadays, many postural problems are on the increase. This why, if your livelihood depend on computers, you have to select your wired keyboard with a measure of care. I personally prefer to buy keyboards online, as opposed to visiting a superstore, as I prefer not to be bothered by sale staff.

Which areas are affected by RSI?

The problems depend on which repetitive action is being practised. The areas of the body most likely to be damaged, is the arm, elbow, wrist or hand. The common sufferers of Repetitive Strain injury are those people using computers, or those performing repetitive tasks such as playing a musical instrument or working in a factory. RSI is also suffered by people competing in sporting activites or DIY enthusiasts, each of whom conduct a repetitive process.

What are the common signs of repetitive strain injury?

The symptoms usually include pain, tightness, throbbing, numbness, or tingling in affected areas. The symptoms usually develop slowly and without much warning. Probably you will notice the general symptoms appear only when the repetitive task is being conducted, disappearing when the muscles are at rest. As time passes, the symptoms tend to remain even when the task has been completed. The pain gradually increases and becomes worse when the task is re-undertaken.

If you wish to buy specialist keyboards, then you should consider a reputable manufacturer.
